The ramblings and mumblings of a wannabe poker pro

Yippeee, more hands

I realize I’ve been  neglecting my blog for some time, this is a joint combination of playing a ton more volume then I have done previously and been too dog tired to filter out worthwhile hands and to get the posted, and also because I’ve been a little more paranoid about sharing my thought process, but to heck… here’s some hands from a short session earlier today.

Here I over call with 87o in the SB, not something I make a habit of doing, but the table was pretty fishy, and I am trying to improve my post flop play. The initial raiser checks, and there’s a min bet and a call, I have raised here in the past, expecting to be up against a flush draw, but calling is way better, as I keep the pot small and can save money if the pre-flop raiser comes alive with a C/R. Easy call on the turn when I pick up an ISD.

I make 2pr, and this is the point where I wasn’t so sure… having got here I wanted to value bet, but the board is pretty scary. In hindsight I think I could safely bet/fold for value here.

Here I open 22 in MP and face a 3B OOP, where just about 200BB’s deep so I call. I miss my set and I’m about to fold, but villain checks behind, I feel his scared of the ace and take the pot away on the turn.

I had started to play a bit auto, but catch myself just before this hand to take advantage of it. After seeing villain play afterward I think I was wrong to assume I could outplay him such a manner but it worked out this time.

I raise 22 BVB and call a small 3B, this is way more marginal because we are much shallower. I whiff the flop again, but being aware that I had insta checked when I whiffed before I pause for a few seconds before doing so, villain c-bets and I used this to my advantage by C/R him off his hand.

I’ve just realized how big of a hand I had here… I must have been falling asleep if I had noticed I had an OESFD, instead of a weak combo +pr, we’ll be playing for stacks on the flop… that aside this was a very passive line for me.

Finally… Some Hands

Apologies for the delay, here’s a selection of hands from this months play at 5nl:

This is a rather old hand now, but I remember villain was playing very pre, and wouldn’t give up much on the flop. I hate my turn shove, because I felt villain was capable of calling my flop raise with something like 7′s or 8′s, but given this turn a shove is just a bluff, ah well.

turning a hand into a bluff

I think I paid too much here, but the river was sweet :-)

Cracking a set

fish tries to block my raises?

Ugly

I’m glad I managed to find this, I’ve been wanting to share it for awhile now. I had a rough note on villain that he was tight, so I called to try and take advantage of him post flop, and to see how he’ll react to me OOP.

I flop great and re-raise his c-bet, I’m mostly just trying to figure him out as I haven’t seen him post flop much. He comes over the top, my first thought was huh does he have TS… then for some reason, I changed tack, and I start to think how much FE I have here, so I shove.

The hilarious thing was that villain moaned at me at showdown… like WTF he couldn’t even beat…

I love this hand

I flop TS here, and it feels like a great spot for a C/R, villain denies, why on earth does he check here, I’ll never know. Similarly, villains are really scared with KK recently, I’ve seen loads just flatting 4B’s and even 3B’s at 5nl.

why do they check

I did a check recently on my money won after calling a 3B, and I am far from profitable, maybe because I only seem to remember outcomes like this.

I got lucky in more ways then one here, because my computer restarted on the river, and I only just made it back in time.

more ways then one

Another great flop

Max Value

This was a rather unusual hand. UTG was very fishy, and I was on the clock, so I was playing any descent hand against him, looking for a flop just like this.

Something will appear

Again I am without a descent update… my blogging skills are severely lacking.

I need to go through my last few thousand hands, hopefully I’ll make a start at the latest on Monday, and I’ll pull out some interesting hands to share.

Note to Self!

Stop 3 barreling fish with Air… that is all.

I need to do some to stop me spewing in spots like this and to improve my isolation / steal play from the blinds.

Sweating

I had my first sweat with fellow 2p2 member Urbansprawler the other day. For those not familiar with the term, check out the uNL forum of 2+2.

It didn’t go all that great initially, 2nd time around last night was better, and I’m sure it will be more productive in the future. We where plagued by a host of “technical difficulties”, mostly my Internet access being really buggy, giving me the pleasure of disconnecting at least 12 times during our link up last night. My table setup also isn’t ideal for this type of thing, as I generally over lap the hell out of my low resolution with 3 or 4 almost full sized tables, which causes problems on the other end when you switch between tables, as it tended to distort in the feed with lag.

I also feel a little limited in what I could offer my partner as well… I’m not really used to talking strat in game, I’m more used to mulling things other or weighing up competing ideas out of game where I have more time, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it. Its also hard for me to comment on my partners hands on occasions too because not using a HUD, I rely heavily on feel and notes from previous hands or sessions, so it takes me awhile to warm up into a session I think.

In other news I have now moved out of 2nl, hopefully for good. My 5nl game is thankfully playing out similarly to my profitable 2nl game, unlike all of that crazy spew I did before. I’m a little tighter and have reduced my aggression some, but that will rise as I get more used to the new level.

I don’t want to set any rigid targets or BI goals or anything like that, I am mostly just playing to improve in some of my weaker areas, which I would guess are turn and river play and bet sizing and to play enough hands where I feel comfortable moving up to 10nl. I don’t want to rush through 5nl, but I certainly don’t want to hang around.

Happy Grinding xxx

Epic Session (well for me)

I’ve just finished what is for me an epic session, 2002 hands, all in one session!, I started off with some 10nl, then 5nl 6m which unfortunately didn’t work out leaving me behind close to 2 BI’s, then I settled in to some 5nl full ring where I played 1,686 hands, which for me is huge, especially as I did another 1k earlier in the day.

This morning went really well I quickly picked up 2 BI’s at 10nl 6max, the two I have now donated back, and despite enjoying my long session it was very rewarding… I am really struggling to get action,  and as you’ll see from my stats I’m no nit. I am pleased that I have tightened up a little though as I was on a slippery slop to aggro donks ville.  I am also pleased that I’ve managed to cling on to a positive win rate for this number of hands, which may be a first, so woot, even if it is only a tiny win rate, at least it gives me somewhere to work from.

I was multi-tabling between 4 and 8 for most of the full ring session, as it was pretty dull otherwise and whilst I wasn’t building big pots I wanted lots of volume so I could steal more blinds, etc.

I’ll be going over my hands next week, as I know I paid a few people off early on, and there where some boards I may have been better c-betting or not c-betting, etc, overall though I’m happy with how I played, especially later on as I’ve never managed more then 6 tables before.

A wrench in the works

Well I’ve gone and thrown a wrench in the works, by spewing $30 at 10nl… at least I build up a friends roll lol.

Here’s a link to my fishy moments:

Fish Gets Stacked

I’m still moving up though… I’m as ready as I will ever be, but this session reminds me how hard I will find it to adjust and to control myself so that I’m not at 2nl forever.

I’ve got a whole bunch of hands to go over, then I’ll probably (at least should be) busy with uni stuff until next week, but hopefully from Monday I’ll be grinding and beat 5nl.

Bluffing

I have been bluffing way too much lately… in a way I’m proud, I’ve found what I believe to be really good spots for some decently big bluffs, some have worked some haven’t.

But… my last session has undone half of the solid work I did earlier in the day… why because I was bluffing in bad spots… and I realized, this bluffing lark can be addictive, you start off doing the odd small bluff then you find more and more profitable bluffing spots, too much of this though can lead to stacking off light and plain old fashioned spew, it took 1.5 buy in’s to grab a hold of myself… shame.

It not that bluffing was bad in itself, but I need to keep a check on myself and make sure I am bluffing for the right reasons at the right time, and to ensure I am not doing it too often just because I can and I’m not afraid to ship 250BB’s on bottom pair.

In other news I had some roaring success earlier (half of which I’ve just undone though) in speeding towards my bankroll target of $350… tomorrow though I may be playing a 10nl or even 25nl cash game with some fellow forum members so they could be some fluctuations in order.

Depending on how tomorrow goes I’ll either skip my target and move up, or push for it, I’m only 4 full buy-in’s off.

Either way before I actually restart 5nl, I’ll be taking a few days to go over all of my hands I played in February and so far this month, there is loads of interesting spots with pair + FD’s, turn bluffs, and other close decision that I need to give some time to and where applicable post for wisdom on 2+2.

A friend of mine will be re-depositing towards the end of the month in an effort to take is online play more seriously. He’ll be starting a grind of the 10nl cash games with some tutelage from so Poker Savvy Plus video’s. I know he’s planning on pushing for 25nl as soon as possible, so I’m planning on finally doing the same… hopefully within a week or so, I’ll have analyzed my recent hands and be grinding a nice win rate at 5nl, then we just have to get through 10nl and its on to 25nl and beyond.

This is my time… I’ve waited long enough, happy grinding :-)

February Stats and Graph

Here’s my graph and stats for my 2nl full ring play during February. Not great, but certainly not bad, and I’ve been stacked in yucky spots a lot recently… hopefully this month will be way better, especially if I can finally get a positive graph for 5nl.
