Poker Games
When a lot of people hear the word poker, they immediately think of the version that they see on TV in Texas Hold’em. More specifically, they may think of No Limit Texas Hold’em as this is the type that is often broadcast. This is because it is the most exciting due to the lack of a betting limit. However, there are actually many different poker games out there.
First off, there is the aforementioned Texas Hold’em. This is definitely the most popular version of all the online poker games and Hold’em sees many new players join its ranks everyday. Poker as a whole has benefited greatly from the popularity of Texas Hold’em and its TV exposure has taken the game to new heights.
Another one that has become more and more widespread in online poker rooms is Omaha. It is hard to say if Omaha is truly the second most popular variation of poker or not but it is close. The reason for its rise among poker games is that Omaha is very similar to Texas Hold’em and people who have become used to Hold’em Poker can naturally make the switch to Omaha.
Before the popularity spike in Hold’em, 7 Card Stud used to be the most widely played version of the poker games. 7 Card Stud differs quite a bit from the previously mentioned games in that players are dealt two downcards each, four upcards each, and then one more downcard.
These are pretty much the three most popular of all the poker games. There are many other types of poker and variations to each type but these are the three that you’ll normally see being played across the world. And if you ever get tired of one type of poker, it doesn’t hurt to try something else once in a while in the form of another one of the poker games.

Thanks for stopping by my little blog!
I think it is good to play something different once in a while. I really want to get into Omaha bt the swings can be brutal to say the least.
Saying that, I just span $4 I had laying around in an old account into $35 in 30mins! Nice work if you can get it!
Very nice work
I’m very interested in Omaha myself but I’ve only had a short venture into PLO thus fair. I likely play more of PLO, and probably try some O8 once I’ve built my bankroll up some more.

Great Post Lucky!
Most people only play hold em. They tend to think that’s the only poker game out there…lol.
I like to play different games also but it’s hard to get some games going b/c the people I play with live only know hold em. Too bad.
Omaha is a fun game. If you’re just starting out maybe you should play limit because I’ve noticed that in PotLimit games (both hold em and Omaha/Omaha hi-lo) the pots tend to be bigger on average than No Limit games. Not sure if that’s true but that’s what I think.
Well anyway, great post and looking forward to reading abour your adventures in Omaha.
Thanks, thats a good suggestion, my limit hold’em sucks actually so a return to limit isn’t a bad idea. As soon as I get my bankroll up some ways, I’ll begin experimenting to find a second game I think. I thought razz was it at first, but I’m not so sure now after my last performance.
This is just a suggestion for Omaha until you get comfortable with the game. Unless you’re ok with it then go ahead and do the pot limit thing.
I really think that you can beat the higher level games to be honest. The super micro levels are too much donkfests if you ask me and you’re too good to allow these donks to suckout against you.
That’s just my opinion Lucky..in any event good luck and hope you grab a few huge pots today!!
Thanks, and I did, last quick session I played flopped a nut straight and doubled up lol.
I’m on a bit of a study period at the moment, trying to improve my game, I’ve got several 2+2 threads I’m working through and I’ve been doing a bit of reading. Sometimes I wish I was pulling more money in, but generally I’m happy with where I’m at in the Micro Games.
I’m aware of a few things that are holding me back, so thats something I”m trying to work on other my next few sessions.
Hi,
Are there any other in depth articles on how to play seven card stud? That might be a good variation from holdem to play with friends.
Hya Greg, I don’t know of any at the moment, though I think Bob Ciaffone may have written a book or two on Stud. You can download his poker rules here, which also cover stud 7.
