The ramblings and mumblings of a wannabe poker pro

What To Do…

I’ve started to think, as I often do about where to take my poker. What should I be doing and where should I be doing it. As I mentioned in a recent comment I’ve draw up a rough game plan of what I expect to be focusing on, but after some games today I’m already wondering if that should be changed.

I’ve just played two $5 single table sit ‘n go’s for instance on Poker Stars. I only made 7th in each, and it took an hour to get to that point. Usually with a $1 sit ‘n go they will last between an hour and an hour and a half for the whole thing, with even two table events not lasting much longer usually. So I am beginning to wonder if playing $5 single table sit ‘n go’s should be my main priority on Poker Stars. If they are going to take an hour or more to reach short handed, then I feel will have no choice but to multi-table them for the time commitment to be worth it, and thats something I didn’t want to have to do initially.

So I’m now back to thinking I should leave the single table events alone and concentrate on the two table sit ‘n go’s. The increase in payouts makes these more worthwhile, as in my experience they don’t usually take much longer then a single table event.

Then I wonder about the cash games, its not long ago where I decided to concentrate on cash games once I’ve earned my bonus, so maybe I should, stick with the 1c/2c NL full ring tables for a while and try and build a bankroll that way. I can always play the occasional sit ‘n go out of the days profits.

I’m happy with my aims for Full Tilt Poker at the moment, but I’m seriously beginning to wonder what I should be doing on Poker Stars when I earn my bonus.

  1. It sounds to me like you tried to step too far up for your level of play. I will admit that I haven’t read your blog in full. In fact only this post and the one above it, but having played for quite some time on an extremely limited bankroll, it seems to me that if you are busting out in 7th at a $5 single table SnG, and being concerned that it took you an hour to do so, you need to concentrate on lower level games. It might not seem like a huge leap from the $1 games to the $5 games, and financially its not, but skill wise it really can be.

Mind you, I’m a pretty ordinary player, and have no aspirations to become a pro. I just wanna have some fun, and maybe win some money while I’m at it.

  2. Sorry about the delay in my reply, only just noticed your comment in my moderation queue.

My point about the time was, that if it takes say two hours to win one of these on average, (so far I’ve only done a handful so don’t know at this point) then that time may be better spent in a 90 man tournament which I’ve recently tried, where you can hit the final table in 2 to 3 hours, although naturally your variance is increased.

Your right in one respect, I didn’t play well enough. I’ve actually been annoyed with myself for a couple of weeks now, and class my general level of play for the period to be appalling.

I’ve realized I have a problem in poker, which may or may not be clear from what I have written recently. I have played a hell of a lot against opponents who have no idea how to play, and have built my game around it, so against someone who actually does have a solid grasp of the game, I can sometimes flounder and end up looking like a total idiot.

Another problem for my game is that I’ve hardly played in recent months. Thanks to having a nasty eye infection, I’m not used to the sit ‘n go’s at all anymore really, especially as I’ve spent so much time, since I became well enough to play playing only heads-up sit ‘n go’s.

Thanks for stopping by and for the food for thought xxx

Dead tired reply warning : Its 1am, if my reply sounds dumb, 20% of it may be because I’m really sleepy :p
