The ramblings and mumblings of a wannabe poker pro

Frequent Floater Gets Bitten

Sorry, I’ve left it too late and now I’m really too tired to get an updated posted, but I just wanted to share a recent hand from the session I’ve just finished.

Villain was becoming a bit of a pain in the bum, I couldn’t quite work out whether he was a bit of a donk, or a TAG playing back at me lol. After the umpteenth time of me hitting scare card on the turn and river and then check-folding to his big bet, the following hand came up, and I felt I had just enough to catch him in the act with a busted draw or garbage, if he had it, ah well I had to look him up this time.

The hand seemed to put him on tilt, because he was virtually down to the felt within an orbit or two after this, by spewing like crazy. (I’ve changed villains name in the HH).

Loosing Streak

Since I have moved back down to 1c/2c, have been loosing more consistently then I ever have, and it is very frustrating. More so in that I can’t really put my finger on why, I think I’ve begun to do a few new things and overall its having a negative effect on my bottom line.

I’ve increased my opening range from my early 1c/2c days, I’m raising far more then I usually do, and I’m also attacking the limper’s a lot from the HJ, CO and BUT with hands like QT, KT, KJ, this is leaving my in marginal spots post flop, coupled with the fact that I have close to zero fold equity at certain times of the day, like last night when someone called a 20c raise with K4 off suite.

I haven;’t played much really though since dropping back down, and when I have my sessions have been really short, barley more then an hour or often 8 tables or more. I’m going to do my best to put some real hours in and turn things around.

I think I’ve got a few leaks at the moment.

1. Attacking the limper’s with marginal hands, as much as I hate calling with hands like KJ from the HJ, a lot of the time, all I’m doing is building a pot, sometimes I’ll even have the best hand like when K4 called my raise, but I think as much as I hate to even consider it if I’m being called down post flop, calling along and trying to hit 2 pair plus is likely a better approach for most of my 2NL games.

2. I’m trying to push my FE, I’ll raise in MP with 97s, 86s, T9, etc and flop an OESD, I’ll bet or raise the flop and bet the turn, last night I was doing this against passive idiots who would check down KK, TPTK, etc, but call any bet, so its easy to spot an alternative strategy. I need to be prepared to show weakness by checking the turn in these cases and try to draw cheap if I miss.

WTF! kinda somes up how I’m feeling about my play at the moment, I just don’t seem to be able to take anything home, and thats more then a little irritating, I want to be rolled for 25NL by the end of the year, at this rate, I’ll be lucky to be rolled for 10NL.

Another Session

I played another session this evening, and I felt much better about my play, my game and myself. No money to add to the roll, only a $2 loss for my trouble, but otherwise it was a good session.

Two hands stood out so I posted them at 2+2, here’s the links :

Depressing

For maybe the first time since I switched to the cash games, poker is really depressing me. My bankroll as nose dived over the last week forcing me to drop down and each time I start to make some progress the next session or the next day sets me back again.

I’m essentially trying to play ABC at the moment whilst 12 tabling, and I cant’ stop thinking, and debating with myself weather this is the best way to go. I can managed 12 tables, certainly not anymore but I’m confident I can play ABC on 9 to 12 tables without too much trouble. I do keep debating with myself wether this is the most profitable route to take, and more so weather I’ll ever succeed in this fashion, that coupled with occassional bursts of spew and things not falling my way over the last week have started to take their toll.

The bottom line is that I’m really really not happy with my playing abilities, my short hand game sucks, maybe its just that the few times I’ve played I’ve had the negative side of things mostly, but I always seem to come off worse off when short handed and despite concentrating on NLHE, I am really unhappy with my performance.

Performance in itself as become a big problem for me, I lost all perspective and I seem only able to judge my own performance on how others are doing, comparing win rates and such, and within that mind sight I am very unhappy about things.

Another issue thats griding me is ABC play itself, I mean essentially if all the regulars, and 90% or more seem to tow this line at 1c/2c, 2c/5c play an ABC game, how on earth do you expect to beat them, it simply doesn’t make any sense to me.

At the moment I’m going to do my best to grind 1c/2c until I can pick up another 12 buy-in’s, then I’ll be giving myself a weak off from poker to recompose myself before I move up to 2c/5c again.

Here’s a few hands from my last session :

I remember loosing some nerve on the end, fearing AQ and opted to check-call rather then lead out. Totally stupid AQ is already there on the flop, once I’ve got to the river, I can’t be worried about AQ and the nut straight. I suspected my draw was good, so I should have bet for value.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2872331

Is JJ ever good here. I didn’t c-bet as there wasn’t much I’m ahead of at this point, but when villain checked behind and made a weak turn bet I felt otherwise, first 3-bet pot I was involved in, I’ve been raising rather a lot.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2872606

Villain was pretty new to the table, but from previous hands I knew he was weak here, on the flop it felt like a whiffed AK, on the turn I stuck with my read and made the call. Am I too weak myself to make such a call here?

More 1c/2c Mayhem

I’ve just finished a 3 hour, 1k hand plus 1c/2c session, what was my reward 33c lol. I started off playing 9 tables, and after a QQ against KK episode (QQ certainly isn’t my top hand at the moment :p) and me being a total donkey and spewing money like I’m allergic to it things weren’t looking so good.

As dumb as it sounds, my problem isn’t that I bluff too much, or that I play marginal hands or that I call when I could be ahead x percent of the time. My real big problem is that I call when I’m obviously waaay behind and have like zero outs, I mean seriously I’ve become the biggest spew monkey pay off wizard the game has ever known.

OK, now that I’ve got that little rant off my chest lol, I decided to step up to 12 tables. Yesterday I was sure I couldn’t fit anymore on my screen t hen 9, today though I was grinding 12 tables for at least an hour, and was enjoying it, well mostly.

I started to ponder wether I’m going to become a multi-tabling ABC player, but quickly threw those thoughts out of my head whilst sat down to ponder after my session. I never wanted to be a multi-tabler, but I’ve found myself doing it. I never wanted to play ABC, I prefer to play the player, well as best as you can at micro stakes, but maybe I’m accepting that the two combined have some merit.

Today was a good session, I expect my win rate to have taken a nice big hit, as hardly any profit in 1k hands can’t be good for it, but I feel the session was good for myself, almost a fresh start. I’ll be playing now if it wasn’t for the fact I need to eat, and I’ll certainly be doing another 12 table session later if I can fit one in. Wheter I 6, 9 or 12 table when I’m back at 2c/5c is something I’m undecided on yet, though I’m well aware I am at a huge disadvantage if I end up 9+ multi-tabling without Poker Tracker, as feel reads are virtually impossible when your playing so many tables.

I’ll leave you with some of the more interesting hands from the session :

Good old set vs TPWK

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2866764

Flop trips and I’m out kicked, I’m normally checking behind on this river, but I went for a little extra value.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2866772

I flop a straight with AK

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2866784

3-bet pot with KK on an A high flop.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2866788

Do you stack off here?, back before I moved up I think would have pushed this turn.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2866802

I think this villain floated me off a few hands later on, but its hard to tell when your playing 12 tables.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2866811

Pair + FD, facing R/R on turn, bad call?

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2866820

Similar story to above, this time with TP / FD, villain pushes turn, was I getting the right price to call here?

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2866828

This is the 2nd time I remember this occurring, when the short stack pushed for 19c more, I couldn’t come over the top of the other player , I could only fold or call, can anyone explain this to me?

First 1c/2c Session

I’m just about to finish my first 1c/2c exclusive session since I moved up to 2c/5c and blind steeling appears to be extremely profitable here. It is far harder to build a decent pot here then it is at 2c/5c, so I plan to be the worlds biggest blind thief to make up for it.

The money is totaly insignificant, (although every cent counts) but this bad beat I just gave someone put such a smile on my face I just got to show it. I figured being a tiny stack he’ll be pushing more then 88+ nope, good old micro nits who never seem to 3-bet without KK or AA lol.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2864556

Ahh I’m so weak, almost feel sorry for him.

Some Recent Hands

I haven’t posted many hands for awhile, so I thought I’ll post a collection from some recent sessions :

Call down with an over pair.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2863583

I remember almost folding on this river.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2863621

How do you feel about betting this turn, if villain as an ace it beats my own, though I still have flush outs?

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2863628

One time when QQ won a pot for me.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2863654

Me getting out of line, being sucked out on or bluffed off a pot, you decide.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2863667

A pretty dumb river bet on my part.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2863678

Some players just beg to be insulted.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2863697

Firing a 2nd barell into kings, yes, villain did limp call with KK!

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2863705

A hand that gave me grief, I blame it on playing 9 tables for the first time.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2863747

I felt like I was up against a semi-bluff here, so I raise enough to deny him the odds to draw against me. When he shoves I felt committed and called, questionable re-raise with TP, but ver bad call on my part.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2863767

Here’s one that got away (with some chips) lol.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2863777

Bluff catching.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2863810

A rare call with A high on the flop, but this villain was happy to bluff away chips so I felt I could easily be ahead on this flop.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2863814

I suck out for a change, serves villain right for not raising his kings pre-flop.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2863823

Do you check-fold this turn, when called on this flop?

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2863826

Is my set good enough of the time to call on this river?

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2863842

Similar story here, after I flop a straight.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2863861

I was getting frustrated tonight, after crap like this kept on happening.

Slow Learner

I guess I’m a slow learer, its taken me forever to adjust to these 2c/5c players, its such a huge difference from 1c/2c. Back at the old limit nearly everyone is loose passive, except for a few regulars who are mostly tight aggressive pre-flop and tight passive post flop, interspersed between the two are the occassional lucrative maniacs and the odd loose aggressive. Here at 2c/5c just about everyone seems to play a fit or fold styple of play, if they hit its hard to get a fold, unless of course you flop the nuts, then the yellow streak seems to get a fold out of them, generally though they only have any heart when your bluffing.

I stacked off with QQ again, I shoudl have folded, but putting in half my stack to then fold on a J high flop, I couldn’t manage it though given 3-bet ranges here I likely should have.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2863437

Another two buy-in’s down in this evenings session, all of it down to suckouts or calling off with the aforementioned QQ, villain had aces on that occassion.

The swings I’ve experience since moving up to 2c/5c have been huge, my first session gave me a win-rate of -185! within a week that was +1 2 days more that was +12 the next day I’m back in the red! Apart from what may be a far too low WTS % my game looks very solid, at least to my limit understanding of all of the numbers, I just seem to be blowing what profit I’m making in 1 or 2 hands each session, such as the QQ vs KK and QQ vs AA hands today.

I think I’m clearly stuck in the middle of a bad run, what worries me is that I’m not sure if I have a fundamental leak in my game that is causing me problems. I really wish I could give PokerEV a run but it only works for Poker Tracker.

My bankroll has reached a point where I can’t sustain my play at 2c/5c, so I’m going to drop back down to 1c/2c, though I feel I’ve gotten used to 9 tabling now, so It shouldn’t take me long to get back to a point where I’m happy to move up again.

Tough spot with queens?

I found myself in a tough spot earlier with pocket queens, I was UTG and faced a 3-bet so I came over the top strongly, whether I was stacking off if villain pushed was still in debate in my mind, but I was sure I didn’t want to flat call her 3 bet and face 3 or more opponents on the flop OOP. Villain flat calls, normally in this spot villain is holding something like AK or QQ.

I hit a safe flop, now I’m either way ahead or way behind, check-folding is ridiculous, I’m essentially committed so I push. Villain calls after some thought with KK. Given the action do you think I need to take a differen’t line in future?

http://www.pokerhand.org/?2862333

PS: I’m looking for a new hand converter, ideally one that changes all villain names not  just my own, I’ve tried FTR and Lego and just get error’s or nothing seems to work, any recommendations?

Worst day by far

I’ve just had my worst day so far, with a total daily loss of around $60! I wasn’t feeling too happy after a couple of earlier sessions, so I opted to add a couple more tables. so I started 7 - 9 tabling for the first time using the Poker Stars tile tables feature, rather then overlapping 6 tables which I usually do. After I got used to it, it seemed to work out well, besides having to lean in on occasion to double check bet amounts and stack sizes.

Win rate and money wise though today has been a total disaster. I’ve just come off a long sting, where I racked up over 1k hands. This final session cost me a little over 4 buy-in’s. I lost at least one buy in when I got kings all-in pre-flop against AK, and not soon after I found myself all-in with kings again this time up against aces, so theres two buy-in’s down on coolers.

The rest is a mix of spew and suck outs. Yesterday my win rate was over 12 BB/100, now I’m likely back in the red, I’m very disappointed, but I still don’t think I’m playing that bad, I think today has simply been one of those long days where nothing goes my way, for instance twice I called a 3-bet and hit the flop hard, only for villain to fold to my PSB on the flop instead of stacking off.

I do though feel I have a big leak, not in my game as such, but in how I approach these games, most of my opponents seem to be in one of two camps. Stupid post flop or ABC, fit or fold types post flop. I fucking hate the ABC and especially the fit or fold game, yet I find it hard to accept thats what people are really playing like here. I see a bet sequence and read it had x where its really villain has just flopped the nuts and his betting, or I check it to him heads up and he bets, it doesn’t get much more complicated for these folks.

I’m going to try and take a couple of days off to recompose myself as dropping 6 buy-in’s in one day is bound to have an effect on me somewhere. The most important thing I need to do though is leave my Ego at the door, or whatever it is that makes me feel that all the regulars are really trying to out play me, very few of them are if any, and the ones that do generally don’t have the heart to do it in a big pot. They simply hit and play there hand and that’s it.

I’ll get a whole bunch of hands uploaded in a day or two.
